Negotiation is often viewed in a negative light. We think of backroom deals, car salesmen, and trying to get the most out of a situation. But we negotiate almost every day, even if we’re not always aware of it. For example, what are we going to eat tonight and who’s going to do the dishes? Negotiation is simply a process in which two individuals or groups try to reach an agreement through proposals and counter-proposals.
Taking this broad perspective (see also Negotiation method) towards negotiation, you’ll see that it permeates your work environment as well: when setting up your own business, creating partnerships, engaging in co-creation, in leadership or collaboration in (complex) projects, reaching sound decision-making, and dealing with deadlocks and conflicts. Essentially, everything is a negotiation!
